Hey Friend!
Are you an early riser? Or do you roll out of bed 30 minutes before you have to leave the house for the day? Everyone is different based on their current lifestyle and schedule. Of course, there are seasons where you have to be a night owl (night school, new baby, work event, etc.)
Numerous people have asked me why I get up so early in the morning. They find it ridiculous and unbelievable more times than not. The truth is, getting up early creates a disciplined routine of habits and in turn, gives you all the feel good endorphins.
Everyone’s morning routine looks different – a run to pumped up music, meditation, the gym, reading, prayer, household chores or working a side hustle. What is the one thing all of these different things have in common? They all create a routine. A routine creates habit. Habits require discipline.
Therefore, waking up early allows you to enjoy the rest of your day because you were disciplined enough to put in the work early on to be able to start your day off positively. As I mentioned earlier, there are seasons when waking up early is more scarce than other times and that is completely acceptable and okay!
If you want a glimpse into my morning routine here it is (most days):
- 4:30am | Alarm goes off
- 4:31am | Still laying in bed contemplating sleeping in
- 4:32am | Feet hit the floor and I make my pre-workout drink (if you want the details on my drink check out my blog here: http://meaghanscott.com/is-a-pre-workout-worth-it/
- 4:33am-5:15am | Prayer, Bible study, Personal Development reading, Blog (my days alternate between PD and blog)
- 5:15am | 30-40 minute workout (at-home workouts are amazing!)
- 6:00am | Start the shower and make the bed
- 6:05am | Shower + get ready for work
- 6:30am | Focus on the kids + eat breakfast + coffee
In the most recent months, I’ve been alternating my workout for our sauna in the morning. I’ve also allowed for more rest days since I was going to night school for the last year and my body needed sleep on those nights. A routine doesn’t mean perfection every day, I’ve learned a lot over the last year about giving myself grace and allowing me to not live to all-or-nothing.
For me being a full-time employee, wife and mom, it’s hard to find time to fill my own cup so it’s crucial that I have a 4:30am wake-up call to get this time in! Now, don’t get me wrong – life happens like when my toddler has a nighttime potty accident and we’re up at 2am cleaning sheets or a sick child and I will hit snooze on the alarm…those are only few and far between and I’m okay with that because my #1 job is being a wife and mom. Focus on the majority. It’s not fun to wake up so early but I know if I do my day starts off so much better! As I’m sure many of you can relate, working full time only allows me a short window morning and night to spend with my girls and I don’t want to rob them of this precious time.
Waking up early also means going to bed at a decent hour so you can get up the next morning. It’s not hard since you’ve already been up 16 hours and are tired by 8:30pm. Your body needs the rest. I am typically laying in bed by 8:15pm and asleep by 8:30-8:45pm, if not sooner as long as the kids are asleep 🙂
